Mission and Objectives of the EuroFGI Network of Excellence

Project Mission

The main mission of the Euro FGI network is to create and maintain the most prominent European center of excellence in Next Generation Internet design and engineering, acting as a "Collective Intelligence Think Tank", representing a major support for the European Information Society industry and leading towards a European leadership in this domain.

The recent technological advances will lead to exploitable innovative services once the integration of these technologies through innovative architectures is achieved.

The Future Generation Internet (FGI) will offer view multi-service/multimedia, mobility, convergence (services and fixed-mobile), Quality-of-Service and variable connectivity as the norm. On one hand, future high-speed wire-line and wireless access technologies provide instant high bandwidth connectivity, which makes difficult to forecast traffic and thus to apply existing traffic engineering methods. On the other hand, the technology diversity explodes and mastering such a heterogeneous environment becomes essential to the network designer. This requires investigation into new multi-technology architectures. It is understood today that new design, planning, dimensioning and management principles are needed.

In this context, the main topics addressed by the NoE are:

  • Mastering the technology diversity (vertical and horizontal integration) for the design of efficient and flexible FGI architectures.

  • Providing required innovative traffic engineering architectures adapted to the new requirements and developing the corresponding appropriate quantitative methods.

  • Euro-FGI Objectives

Following the main topic ten goals have been derived

  • Goal 1 - Integrating and rationalizing the European research efforts - Establishing and Updating a Knowledge Roadmap
  • Goal 2 - Implementing a Strong Program of Jointly Executed Research Activities
  • Goal 3 - Sharing Methods, Tools and Platform Developments
  • Goal 4 - Organization of internal Workshops for a thorough exchange of ideas and knowledge
  • Goal 5 - Facilitating the Information Exchange and the usage of Advanced Communication Tools
  • Goal 6 - Facilitating the Mobility of Researchers and PhD Students
  • Goal 7 - Creation of a European graduate courses program for PhD students to maintain and the high expertise level
  • Goal 8 - Creation of a Summer School as a tool for communication and for training of young researchers
  • Goal 9 - Spreading Excellence
  • Goal 10 - Consolidate collaboration with industry
  •

    Summer school

The summer school will be an important tool for the education of researchers in the FGI domain. It will also help to spread the excellence outside the network since it will be open to non members. The Summer school will also be an important integration tool. Euro-FGI is integrating two research communities, the tutorials presented during the Summer Schools will help in strengthening the synergy between them. External experts (from industry and North American and Japanese universities, for example) will be invited to present tutorials to provide an external and complementary view of the domain.
